Tuesday, 14th February 2006 (3131 views)

Gold nuggets have been found in the tunnel heading in the Alaskan Swede Channel Project, run by international gold company Silverado.

On February 9th and 10th, engineers used metal detectors for selective sampling along the pay channel and turned up 2.1 ounces of placer gold.

The find included three large nuggets, the heaviest weighing nearly two-thirds of a troy ounce. The other nuggets weighed 0.375 and 0.529 troy ounces, and the gold was valued at around $1,350 at today's prices.

A previous discovery made by Silverado at the Swede Channel was a 14.06 troy ounce nugget in the winter of 1998 – 1999.

The company also discovered the tenth largest gold nugget found in Alaska in 1994, weighing 41.35 troy ounces.

The Swede Channel tunnel is being advance at a rate of around 20 feet each day.
