Valentine's spend jumps 40%Monday, 13th February 2006 (3898 views) It's set to be one of the best Februarys on record for US jewellers, with figures indicating Valentine's Day spending could be up 40 per cent year-on-year.US shoppers are lapping up gold jewellery and other Valentine's Day gifts ahead of the big day tomorrow, data from Unity Marketing quoted by the National Jeweller suggests. Unity's survey was conducted when just 15 per cent of shoppers had made their purchases. In total, 54 per cent of shoppers questioned said they intended to splash out on a gift. But 2006 is on course to be a bumper year if early trends are anything to go by, with the average consumer having already spent $105 - 40 per cent more than in 2005. The news could be a big boost to high street jewellers, as February 14th is the third biggest gift-giving holiday of the year behind Christmas and Mother's Day.. A rise in men buying jewellery for their partners could be partly behind the surge in sales. The National Retail Federation recently found that 22.4 per cent of men plan to present their partners with a gift of jewellery on Valentine's Day 2006, compared to just 18.1 per cent last year.
