Newly issued Vatican gold coins are tipped to become collector's items.

According to the Associated Press, the gold and silver coins are the first ever to feature Pope Benedict, who was made Pope in April of this year.

The €20 coin will retail for around €160 and there will be an application form for collectors hoping to get one of these special edition coins.

While the silver coins will carry the image of Pope Benedict XVI, the gold ones will sport the image of Pope Julius II.

They are being minted to commemorate the 500th anniversary of the Swiss Guard, when Swiss military men placed themselves at the disposal of then Pope Julius II.

A €2 coin dedicated to the Guard will also be released in 2006.

Pope Benedict XVI today blessed the Olympic flame in St Peters' Square.
