The 2005 Arab Jewelry Exhibition kicked off yesterday in Bahrain.

The five-day event is taking place in the Bahrain International Exhibition Centre and is playing host to 500 exhibitors from 28 countries.

In a clear sign of the importance Bahrain attaches to the show, the country's prime minister was there to cut the ribbon and delivered an opening speech setting out Bahrain's credentials.

"Bahrain is capable of hosting the largest fairs that attract visitors from all around the world and create unparalleled trade and investment opportunities," commented prime minister Shaikh Khalifa.

Organisers may claim the exhibition trumps the MidEast Watch and Jewellery Show, which took place in UAE only last week and pulled in 225 exhibitors from 25 countries.

The prime minister definitely didn't swan off early as he was spotted touring the exhibition's 500 pavilions.

The displays – run by a combination of local and international vendors – showcased an opulent mixture of gold, silver, gem and diamond jewellery, as well as world-class watches.

2005 is the 14th consecutive year the exhibition has been held, which the organisers claim mirrors the trust international firms place in the country.
