Gold is being tipped as the present of choice for discerning loved ones this Christmas.

According to recent jewellery research, customers are increasingly looking to the top end of the gold market for their jewellery purchases.

"Gold jewellery and Christmas have gone hand-in-hand for centuries," says Michael Hoare, chief executive of the National Association of Goldsmiths.

Allyson Thomas, president of the gold manufacturers' association, Emagold UK, believes that customers are increasingly willing to pay that bit extra for higher quality jewellery.

"There has definitely been a shift towards 18ct gold as consumers appreciate that with jewellery, as with so many other things in life, quality counts," she said.

The price of gold rose by 1.6 per cent last week to $486.90 an ounce, the highest it has been since January 1988.
