An aesthetic and practical technology using gold has been highlighted at a recent seminar, reports Design News.

The aesthetics industry manager of GE Plastics, Sam Lugiano, spoke on the growing interest in surfaces able to combine a pleasing appearance with performance-enhancing properties.

One such development uses a plastics dye based on a gold salt. When exposed to moisture the surface turns to a copper colour, before returning to its original colour when it dries. This technology could find application as a chemical sensor.

On the nanoscale gold is suitable for a variety of applications in the fields of medicine, electrical engineering and manufacturing.

Mr Lugiano reports that the company is currently looking for development partners, as the technology is ready to progress to the next stage.
