A collection of 1,800 rare coins is now on display in Ahmedabad, India, Expressindia has reported.

The coin medley - on show at the N C Mehta Art Gallery - contains gold, silver, copper and bronze currency from throughout Indian history.

The family of the collection's former owner, Priyakant Munshaw, handed the coins to the gallery after he passed away.

Mr Munshaw never had the collection valued, although the coins' worth will soon be discovered when the gallery obtains a valuation for insurance purposes.

Although the gallery is displaying the original silver, copper and bronze coins, it has replaced the gold coins with replicas for security reasons.

The gallery's founder, Dr Bharati Shelat, said the coins "are a very reliable source for reconstructing the course of history".

The collection includes relics from the 4th to 5th century Gupta period and the 10th to 16th century Mughal period.

Some of the coins date as far back as the first century BC Imperial Roman and Appolodotus periods.
