An exhibition at the Benaki Museum in Athens will feature some of the oldest gold jewellery in existence.

Featured will be a 2nd century BC gold pendant showing a bust of Aphrodite. The piece is as big as a small coin, but its value is priceless.

Also on display will be a Roman bracelet composed of twisted gold wire that has two snake heads emerging from it.

However the centrepiece of the exhibit will almost certainly be a 3rd century AD braided gold necklace with a coin pendant.

The piece has a finely made leaf decoration with a picture of Hadrian around its edges that is a trademark of that era of jewellery making.

The exhibition will be open to the public until May 28, 2006.
