Ancient Mesopotamia is set to come alive at an exhibition entitled Treasures from the Royal Tombs of Ur, held at the St Louis Art Museum in Missouri.

The objects on display date back nearly 5,000 years and are finely rendered in gold, silver, lapis lazuli and ivory.

Exhumed in the 1920s, the burial ground of the King and Queen of Ur in modern-day Iraq and Syria, revealed treasures to rival those of Tutankhamen.

The tombs contained vessels of gold, silver, copper and stone, which held food to nourish the deceased in the afterlife along with a wealth of precious jewellery.

According to the St Louis Post-Dispatch, Queen Puabi was buried in a sizable gold headdress incorporating a gold comb with seven rosettes.

Among the series of events taking place alongside the exhibition will be Golden Treasures, in which families will be encouraged to make their own jewellery, with a metals artist on hand to offer inspiration.

The exhibition is running until January 15th 2006.
