One of the most important gold medals from Britain's military history has been sold at auction for a record £248,000.

According to Christies', the gold medal awarded to Vice-Admiral Thomas Hardy for his part in the Battle of Trafalgar is "arguably the most important medal from British military history ever to be offered at auction".

Vice-Admiral Hardy was Nelson's right hand man at the battle of Trafalgar and also fought with him in the battles of the Nile and Copenhagen.

The gold medal went to a private bidder after several minutes of bidding, making it the most expensive medal ever sold at auction.

Other Nelson memorabilia was also up for auction, to commemorate the bicentenary of the Battle of Trafalgar.

Another recent Nelson auction also set a world record; Lord Nelson's gold pocket watch he wore at the Battle of Trafalgar went for the highest amount ever recorded for Nelson memorabilia at £400,000.
