Wednesday, 19th October 2005 (3465 views) Red Back Mining has announced that gold mining has begun at its Chirano gold mine in Ghana.The announcement comes after 14 months of research and testing. So far 4,000 ounces of gold have been recovered and 750 ounces produced. Red Back's project managers have forecasted 145,000 ounces to be produced during the first three years of production. It hopes to average 123,000 ounces per year, during the mine's scheduled 8.5-year operation. President and chief executive officer at Red Back, Richard Clark, said: "Chirano is the first new mine in Ghana for years and the first under President Kufour's government. The successful commissioning of Chirano clearly confirms Ghana's commitment to mining and foreign investment, both at a national and local level."
