Dilip Nayalchand Desai has been practicing the ancient art of painting with gold for over 30 years, reports UNI.

The 57-year-old artist has had several of his paintings exhibited at Mumbai's Jahangir Art Gallery and champions the art form.

It takes him around a month to complete an average painting, which can fetch prices from Rs35,000 to Rs150,000.

Gold is used in various forms throughout Indian art. In one technique, hailing from the Maharajas of Tanjore, beaten gold leaf is applied to an image along with gilt metal and precious jewels.

Gold has been used through the centuries and proved particularly popular under Mughal Emperor Akbar in the sixteen century who was a dedicated patron of the arts.

Indian artist Kanhai Chitrakar is also known for painting with gold and recently taught a workshop on his own brand of the art form, using more gold than is usual.
