Freemasons display their gold

Thursday, 22nd September 2005 (3048 views)

The freemasons are a notoriously secretive organisation, but the Kalgoorlie-Boulder branch is displaying some of its gold regalia in the West Australia Musuem, reports ABC Goldfields.

Gold is of particular importance to the Goldfields region and much of the precious metal has been incorporated into Freemasons jewellery.

All the historic jewels on display are made from gold and, according to local Freemason Doug Daws, their craftsmanship and rarity makes them worth thousands of dollars.

Also on display are booklets from installation ceremonies and Masonic tools.

Another gold-related exhibition showing at the West Australia Museum in Kalgoorlie-Boulder is Fortunes Down Below. Detailing the history and heritage of the Eastern Goldfields, it includes a collection of gold nuggets and the first gold bar ever minted in Kalgoorlie-Boulder.

Situated in the outback, Kalgoorlie is one of Australia's biggest gold producing areas.
