Gold was popular with Richmond footballer, Mark Coughlan's girlfriend last night at the AFL Brownlow Medals award.

Held to award the AFL's best and fairest players, the Australian football awards attracted a glittering array of footballers and their fashionable partners.

Mr Coughlan's girlfriend, Gemma Poole, was the first to grace the red carpet and wore an orange Wayne Summer dress complemented with gold jewellery, reported the Herald Sun news.

The top award was handed out to the West Coast midfielder Ben Cousins, who attracted 20 votes.

Occupying the other top spots were Eagles midfielder Daniel Kerr, with 19 votes, and St Kilda's Nick Dal Santo Cousins who came third with 18 votes.

Among the well dressed at the Brownlow awards was Carla McGuire, who wore a canary yellow dress designed by Scanlan and Theodore.
