Friday, 16th September 2005 (4111 views)

The first precious metal jewellery store to be located in a Disneyland houses a 79 centimetre 18-carat gold Mickey Mouse worth $177,000.

Disney-mania has reached China with the opening of Hong Kong Disneyland on Monday, and two large jewellers have wheeled out new collections to coincide with the Disney launch, reports the International Herald Tribune.

The latest range of Disney gold jewellery should appeal to Chinese consumers who are known for being both keen on gold and enthusiastic about cute characters.

"Asian consumers like cute characters. For adults, Disney brings them a lot of happy memories," Sallus Wong, corporate manager at Chow Sang Sang, the Disney site shop, told the paper.

Another jewellers, Chow Tai Fook, has launched collectors' pendants, which include a limited edition of 1,000 Beauty and the Beast blue roses set in 18-carat white gold and retailing for $410.

China is expanding as a consumer of gold jewellery due to the increasing disposable incomes of its population.
