Guinor begins Kelian gold transfer

Monday, 18th July 2005 (2804 views)

The first barge containing the dismantled Kelian processing and gold plant has started its journey to Guinor's mine in Guinea, West Africa.

The first of the 12 barges left from the river port of Jelemuq in Indonesia after obtaining all the necessary regulatory clearances.

The journey, which is estimated will take three to five months, will see the plant going via Samarinda and then Pelepas in Malaysia before reaching its destination of Conakry, Guinea.

Guinor says the global re-location of the plant marks a significant milestone in the company's expansion of the LEFA Corridor in Guinea.

The president and chief executive of Guinor, Trevor Schultz, added that the lengthy process of relocating the plant is entirely justified.

He explained that "escalating capital costs and extended equipment delivery schedules" mean relocating an existing plant is more cost-effective than building a new one from scratch.

And other work is already underway: "Engineering design based on the Kelian plant has been ongoing since January and the selected civil engineering contractor is mobilising to the LEFA site.

"In addition, pre-stripping of the Lero pit using the existing mining contractor is underway."

He concluded: "Although we have experienced a few months delay in obtaining the Indonesian approvals to ship the plant, these preparatory activities will help to give us a fast start when the first shipments arrive in Guinea in the fourth quarter of this year."
