Rare gold watch tops auction

Wednesday, 13th July 2005 (4443 views)

A yellow gold wristwatch helped Antiquorum to raise a total of US$6 million at its auction in Hong Kong.

The yellow gold wristwatch topped the two-day event, bringing in $412,000 and contributing a significant amount to the total $6 million, which came from 406 lots.

With its value beaten only by rare, minute-repeating 18-karat yellow gold men's wristwatch, a tonneau-shaped water-resistant timepiece fetched the second-highest amount for a watch at the auction.

The platinum piece includes a diamond-set dial in salmon pink featuring a chronograph, perpetual calendar and moon phases.

Antiquorum's chief executive and president Osvaldo Patrizzi hailed the event as a resounding success, commenting: "We are excited to see such a strong interest for our auctions in Asia, with some lots achieving two or three times their estimate."

The news comes following Antiquorum's auction in New York last month, which saw a platinum Breguet wristwatch sold for over $400,000.
