The South African Mint has released a new gold coin in commemoration of Albert Luthuli - South Africa's first Nobel Peace Prize winner and freedom fighter.<br/><br/>The 2005 Protea Gold Coin Series were launched on Tuesday, featuring Chief Luthuli.<br/><br/>Managing director of SA Mint, Andile Mvinjelwa, said: "Chief Luthuli was and still remains a great icon and we are honouring him in the oldest and most significant way we can. <br/><br/>"It is no co-incidence that we are launching this coin (at the same time as) the 50th anniversary of the Freedom Charter. The coins we are striking here are symbolic of Luthuli's role in the Freedom Charter. So this is to amalgamate his striving for freedom. These coins are the beginning of a new series for South Africa's Nobel Prize winners."<br/><br/>Dr Albertina Luthuli, Mr Luthuli's daughter, was at the ceremony on behalf of her family.<br/><br/>The exclusive set is made up of two gold coins minted with a mint mark celebrating the 50th anniversary of the SA Freedom Charter.<br/><br/>There are 400 of the coins available.<img alt="track" src="http://directnews.dehavilland.co.uk/dn.gif?feedid=196&itemid=16049691"/>
