The defending Wimbledon ladies' champion, Russian glamour girl Maria Sharapova, is to wear shoes studded with 18 carat gold on the courts of the All England Club this year.

The 18 year-old revealed that she has no fewer than ten pairs of the gold-inlaid shoes, specially designed for her by Nike, each of which is worth between US $600 and $900.

"My shoes have 18-carat gold on the sides," Ms Sharapova said. "That is something totally different.

"They shine unbelievably, and hopefully that can distract my opponents a little. There's nothing too valuable that I'm going to leave in the locker-room, except my shoes."

The tennis ace is considering extra security for her sparkling footwear when she takes to the courts today to defend her Wimbledon title.
