Indian and African gold jewellery on display in Durban

Friday, 10th June 2005 (4247 views)

A unique jewellery collection featuring both antique Indian and contemporary African designs has gone on display in Durban.

Coming to the South African city after a time on display at the Gold of Africa Museum in Cape Town, the exhibition juxtaposes old and new gold and beaded items.

On loan from the Musee Barbier Mueller in Geneva, Switzerland, the handcrafted South Indian collection represents an ancient jewellery tradition.

The antique pieces depict iconography and cosmology that are many centuries old. Some of them are believed to have originated in temples, where images of gods were created in stone and metal.

Commissioned by AngloGold Ashanti, the African contemporary jewellery was made by rural women and combines gold with intricate beadwork.

The exhibition will run in Durban until August 21st, the Mercury reports.track
