Gold teeth may have been around for centuries, but now the coolest kids in town are tapping in to the benefits of a sparkling smile.

In the US, gold is fast becoming the top choice for youngsters and adults undergoing specialised dental treatment.

According to the president of the American Association of Orthodontists (AAO), Terry Pracht, golden braces are providing a means by which patients can inject a sense of fun and fashion into a previously stigmatised form of treatment.

"One company markets them as jewellery for the mouth," Mr Pracht told SheKnows.com.

The concept could catch on in a big way, as the American trend for "bling" gains weight outside the US.
