Wealthy discover innovative uses for goldWednesday, 18th May 2005 (2770 views) Although gold jewellery is usually worn as a sign of wealth, rich consumers are now eating the precious metal and using it on their face to boost their health.According to Reuters, wealthy Londoners believe that gold has anti-ageing benefits and it is now being used for top-class facials and in expensive meals at London restaurants. Bruce Alexander, joint owner of the Archipelago restaurant in London's West End, said: "In the last four or five months there has been an upsurge in what people do with gold. We have been using it for many years here -- we try to do something different with food." According to Mr Alexander gold can help circulation, clear the blood and enhance people's minds when consumed regularly. A host of dishes at the London eatery contain gold, including melba toast, with shredded foie gras and 24-carat gold leaf and Japanese plum in a jelly containing real gold flakes. Some restaurant owners such as John McClements from Twickenham's McClements claims that gold also tastes good, particularly when combined with chocolate. Expensive bars in London are also now selling vodka with specks of gold in and some are looking to introduce champagne with gold flecks in. Diners can then visit a beauty therapist and experience a gold facial, something first launched in India, or also try new gold cream, gel and masks. However some have been sceptical as to gold's true benefits.
