Gold boosts understanding of planets and stars

Tuesday, 17th May 2005 (4087 views)

Gold is to be used in the latest research to ascertain what happens inside planets and stars.

New scientific results and plans are due to be revealed by researchers at the 2005 Conference on Lasers and Electro-Optics (CLEO), in Baltimore, Maryland, in the US.

The event is being held by the Quantum Electronics and Laser Science Conference (QELS) and the Photonic Applications System Technologies (PhAST) Conference.

One of the topics for discussion is metal melting, which scientists plan to use to look into how atoms rearrange themselves after metals are rapidly heated.

Experiments have already taken place offering the first atomic-level view of the melting process, achieved in femtoseconds, or quadrillionths of a second.

The melting is said to show the extreme states matter approaches during nuclear fusion and offers a view on a nanometer-scale.

Researchers at the University of Toronto have extended experiments to study the melting of metals such as gold to help boost understanding of warm dense states of matter before nuclear fusion.

The conference is being co-sponsored by the Optical Society of America (OSA), the American Physical Society (APS) and the IEEE Lasers & Electro-Optics Society (IEEE/LEOS).track
