Gold coins to commemorate rugby tour

Friday, 13th May 2005 (2792 views)

The Royal Mint has obtained a licence to produce special coins to commemorate the British and Irish Lions rugby tour to New Zealand.

Gold coins will be the most rare and most sought after in the collection, with 1,000 produced, compared to 50,000 nickel-brass and 5,000 silver coins.

Gerald Sheehan, deputy master of the Royal Mint, told the Daily Post: "We are delighted to collaborate with the British & Irish Lions and the New Zealand government to mark the 12th Lions Tour of New Zealand with a series of legal tender collector coins.

"We expect the coins to be extremely popular amongst rugby supporters and coin collectors worldwide."

The reverse design on the coin is of the Lions Crest, created by Michael Guilfoyle.

Teams will leave on May 25th.track
