Sheikh sells and re-buys gold antiques

Monday, 25th April 2005 (3217 views)

A host of gold items and various antiques have been sold and rebought by Qatari collector Sheikh Saud Al-Thani.

According to the Art Newspaper, Sheikh Saud Al-Thani sold 25 items at London's Bonham's last July, but has now reacquired several of the objects.

After he was arrested in February, the Sheikh's collection was impounded by Qatari authorities and transferred to the Qatari Embassy.

Items included a gold pre-Columbian ornament in the shape of an alligator head.

The sale made £6 million and included Egyptian gold jewellery and a diamond and ruby set gold coffee cup holder.

According to reports, before the collection was put on sale at Bonham's, an agent for the Sheikh approached Sotheby's for the sale but for unknown reasons it turned the collection down.track
