Tuesday, 19th April 2005 (4521 views) Metal detector enthusiasts from the Isle of Wight have unearthed three great finds during a recent dig.<br/><br/>Members of the IW Metal Detecting Club uncovered a basket earring, whistle and sword scabbard boss over a period of four days during a dig in the West Wight.<br/><br/>The objects will now be sent to the British Museum for verification.<br/><br/>Among the items was a 4,000 year old Bronze Age basket earring, which one of the enthusiasts first thought was a piece of foil.<br/><br/>"On closer inspection I realised I had found a piece of gold which has since been identified as a basket earring," Terry Orne explained to Isle of Wight Today.<br/><br/>In addition a seventh century gold sword scabbard boss was also uncovered, which would have been used as decoration.<br/><br/>Sean O' Brien who discovered the item, claimed: "I found it on the way back to the car park about three inches down and knew as soon as I saw it that it was gold."<br/><br/>The club was formed just over a year ago and has had a number of successful finds, including gold coins, a cruciform brooch and a posy ring.<img alt="track" src="http://directnews.dehavilland.co.uk/dn.gif?feedid=196&itemid=8308578"/>
