Three top discoveries by Isle of Wight detectorsTuesday, 19th April 2005 (3461 views) Metal detector enthusiasts from the Isle of Wight have unearthed three great finds during a recent dig.Members of the IW Metal Detecting Club uncovered a basket earring, whistle and sword scabbard boss over a period of four days during a dig in the West Wight. The objects will now be sent to the British Museum for verification. Among the items was a 4,000 year old Bronze Age basket earring, which one of the enthusiasts first thought was a piece of foil. "On closer inspection I realised I had found a piece of gold which has since been identified as a basket earring," Terry Orne explained to Isle of Wight Today. In addition a seventh century gold sword scabbard boss was also uncovered, which would have been used as decoration. Sean O' Brien who discovered the item, claimed: "I found it on the way back to the car park about three inches down and knew as soon as I saw it that it was gold." The club was formed just over a year ago and has had a number of successful finds, including gold coins, a cruciform brooch and a posy ring.
