The display was part of a global move to promote the metal to consumers and give gold a more contemporary feel. Bobby Godsell, chief executive of South African mining house AngloGold Ashanti, said: "We want gold to be contemporary, something that is young and people want to possess, to wear." Gold jewellery purchases increased by seven per cent last year, according to figures from the World Gold Council, the highest results since the late 80s.
