Bangkok jewellery fair testament to industry successWednesday, 23rd February 2005 (4474 views) The annual Bangkok Gems and Jewellery fair opened on Monday to announcements of huge growth in the industry, according to National Jeweler.Extended from the usual five days to six, the fair will bring around 3,000 exhibitors and an expected 30,000 visitors to the Impact Exhibition and Convention Centre in Bangkok. Official statistics show that Thailand's 2004 exports of gems and jewellery increased by over five per cent since 2003, exceeding $2.6 billion. Export demand from the United States, Thailand's biggest market, grew by 16 per cent over the previous year - totalling $718 million. Thailand Minister of Commerce, Watana Muangsook, commented that the figures "were accomplished even with an array of importune incidents" that have affected other areas of the economy in Southeast Asia.
