Gold rush returns to the US

Monday, 21st February 2005 (3469 views)

America's traditional gold rush region in the west of the country is preparing for a new influx of fortune seekers as prospects for the precious metal continue to rise.

With gold's price continuing to rise, prospectors are once again looking at sites in the west.

Greg Visconty, a mining geologist who covers three national forests in Oregon, told Associated Press that there were signs the rush was about to return.

"In the past year mining claims have just about doubled," he said.

"A lot of people just enjoy mining. Some are trying to make a living at it," he added.

Mr Visconty said that interest suddenly spiked as the price of gold approached the $400.

With modern operations refining the profit margin necessary to make money from finds, the increased value of the precious metal could usher in a new era of gold prospecting.
