A gold necklace from the Iron Age has been discovered by a metal detector enthusiast.

The ancient, solid gold torc is thought to be worth around £100,000 and was found in a ploughed field on a farm near to Maurice Richardson's home in Newark.

With a twisted design, the necklace weighs 1.5 pounds and is now in the British Museum for valuation and examination.

Mr Richardson has been metal detecting for over 30 years but has never discovered anything worth more than £100.

Originally he thought the item was scrap metal, until he dug down further and saw a glint of gold.
