Newcastle is to play host to some of the best treasures ever found in Britain, including gold jewellery, coins and cups, according to the Hexham Courant.

Items are part of the Buried Treasure exhibition, which comes from London's British Museum and pieces were all discovered by chance by metal detectors and farmers.

Steve McLean, curator of the Hancock Museum, said: "Buried Treasure is the most prestigious exhibition we have ever shown at the Hancock Museum.

"It is a once in a lifetime opportunity for people to see these breath-taking treasures in the North-East."

Among the items on display will be the largest hoard of Roman gold ever found in Britain, gold bracelets and coins, a Bronze Age gold cup from Kent and Iron Age gold jewellery.

The exhibition begins at the Hancock Museum from February 12th and lasts until June 26th.
