Innovative subway jewellery sales on track

The US fashion industry is going crazy over a new pair of gold earrings created in New York, inspired by gates.

The unique jewellery forms part of a collection of one-of-a-kind fashion accessories inspired by the New York City Subways.

Items are on display at the New York Transit Museum shop in Grand Central Terminal and are to be auctioned off to raise money for the museum.

The gold earrings are modelled on wrought-iron subway gates and were created by Simon Alcantara, with a retail value of $9,000.

Gabrielle Shubert, the museum director, told the New York Times: "We're trying to create a cachet: Taking the subway is the coolest thing you can do."

According to Ms Shubert, the goods are popular across a range of people, including US hip hop fans and politicians.

Figures show that subway inspired items now make up over a third of the $4 million annual budget at the museum, with jewellery a best seller.
