Experts to test ancient gold jewelleryThursday, 10th February 2005 (4131 views) Gold jewellery uncovered last year in Greece in an unexplored tomb is to be tested for links with one of the most well known ancient Greek myths - the Argonauts expedition.Items including beads from necklaces and other jewellery made from gold and semi precious stones were found inside a Mycenaean royal tomb on the outskirts of the western Greek city of Volos. Antiquities director, Vassiliki Adrimi-Sismani, commented: "We want to investigate to what extent the myth of the Argonauts and the Golden Fleece has to do with the gold we found." The tests have been approved by the Greek culture ministry and they will take place in June by Louvre museum experts. Argonauts were Greek heroes who stole the Golden Fleece or golden ram's skin, under the command of King Jason of Iolkos. It is hoped testing will ascertain where the gold originates from.
