Celebrities opting for small designers

Monday, 31st January 2005 (5215 views)

A US jewellery designer is proving a hit with celebrities as her designs continuously appear on the big screen.

Kate Holland, from Utah, first noticed a star wearing her creations in 2003, when Cameron Diaz was seen sporting one of her necklaces at the Academy Awards.

Ms Holland explained to the Salt Lake Tribune: "People wear quarter-of-a-million-dollar jewellery to the Oscars. Harry Winston, Fred Layton . . . They can wear any [designer] they want, so it was huge."

Kate Holland Design, set up in 2002, now enjoys designs being worn by the likes of Heather Graham and Jennifer Garner and on the pages of People magazine and In Style.

Pieces tend to include hand-cut precious and semiprecious stones, typically hung individually on a thin gold or silver chain.

The designer also uses vintage pendants, leather, silk cords and shells, with each piece unique.

Popularity with celebrities is becoming a common occurrence with small, unique designers, as movie and music stars try to go for more individual looks to ensure they stand out.
