The old tradition of offering packets of sweets and handmade cards has changed to a philosophy of 'the bigger the better'. Many families splurge on gifts for teachers now, with classroom mothers persuading parents to put money in for eye-popping gifts. Some schools in New York are now banning gifts over a certain value however, so that parents do not feel obliged to buy huge, impressive presents.
