SA looks to big names to promote jewellery

Wednesday, 15th December 2004 (4135 views)

Some of the world's most well known jewellers are being discussed as part of jewellery and diamond plans in South Africa.

The government hopes that diamonds in South Africa can be cut and turned into jewellery with precious metals such as gold to help boost business in South Africa.

Among the companies under discussion is Graff, a high-end jeweller that sells to royalty and superstars, according to Business Day.

"We see SA increasing market share at the top end of the market against other diamond centres like Antwerp, New York and Israel. Manufacturing close to the rough is now a reality," said Brian Gutkin, who runs the group's South African arm in Johannesburg.

Other companies helping to boost the jewellery sector in South Africa is De Beers, which is set to offer supplies to five or six new customers.

The government realises that if it is to generate more activity then it will need the capital and strength of well-known companies.
