Gold used to power super thin screensFriday, 10th December 2004 (4659 views) New technology using gold electrodes could help to produce computer screens that are as thin as a sheet of paper.A University professor in America is developing new technology which could see the new item created in the near future, according to the Daily Princetonian. Stefan Bernhard has spent four years studying organic light emitting devices (OLEDs), which work in a similar way to traffic lights and have an advantage over traditional LEDs. "With our displays, there is no backlight. This solves the problem of colour distortion, energy loss and you could make the screen as thin as one millimetre," Professor Bernhard explained. The OLED device consists of a sheet of organic metal between two electrodes, one of which is made from gold. "If you apply a voltage between the gold and the ITO you generate photons that are emitted from the chromophore," he added. However, the professor still has a number of issues to overcome before the product is in full working order and is suitable for commercial applications.
