White gold replacing platinum in China

Thursday, 25th November 2004 (4288 views)

Jewellers in China are turning to white gold rather than platinum, for the first time in five years.

According to China Daily, jewellers are planning to buy less than one million ounces of platinum this year due to an increasing popularity in gold and falling profit margins.

A number of jewellery manufacturers have begun using white gold and palladium as replacements.

Platinum firm Johnson Matthey has claimed that the drop in platinum this year will be "entirely due to lower purchases by Chinese jewellery manufacturers".

Significant volumes of white gold and palladium first began to be used by jeweller manufacturers in the first quarter of this year.
