Opera star's jewellery to be auctioned

Wednesday, 17th November 2004 (3998 views)

A host of top jewellery items are to go on auction at Sotheby's, once belonging to opera singer Maria Callas.

The auction house claims the selection of 11 items should fetch around £539,000.

Items included in the collection are an 11.7 carat diamond ring, a ruby covered bracelet and pearl drop earrings.

Some of the jewellery was given to the opera star half a century ago by her first husband Giovanni Meneghini.

However, although the jewellery's origin is well known, the actual seller of the items is being kept secret.

Although some have criticised the sale, the Geneva director of Sotheby's has claimed that the auction will allow fans to own a piece of the singer's memory.
