Indian jewellery designers hope to be a hit at home

Two young Indian jewellery designers who have sold jewellery to top film stars and celebrities are now hoping to return to India and make a success there.

Mehboob Hussain Shaw and Sonal Jain sell jewellery through exhibitions and set up after studying Indian and Islamic Art History at the School of Oriental and Asian Studies (SOAS) and at Sotheby's in London.

"The Indian jewellery market is changing fast, no longer is jewellery seen just as investment. It's also a major style statement, to go with mood and clothes and season.

"It's not just to keep in the bank, passed from generation to generation or sold in a family emergency," Ms Shaw told the Indo Asian News Service.

The designers produce 18 carat gold jewellery, costing between R20,000 and R400,000.

Clients of the team have included Tom Cruise, Jennifer Lopez, Nicole Kidman, Uma Thurman and Sarah Jessica Parker.

At present the main market for the jewellery is in Britain, the US and the Middle East where even princesses have bought their creations.

The girls are positive about their move in India, explaining: "We already have a few Bollywood clients and clients from one of the top business houses in Mumbai."
