Golden Pitman pen fetches amazing auction result

Wednesday, 27th October 2004 (3165 views)

A pen once owned by the pioneer of shorthand, Sir Isaac Pitman, has sold for over £700 at auction.

The pen, which had a gold nib, was thought to be worth around £80 to £120, but sold for much more.

The item was part of an auction at Bonhams and was part of a host of items from his home.

A Bonhams spokeswoman told BBC News Online: "The sale was well attended and we had phone bids from as far afield as Singapore.

"We expected a great deal of interest, particularly as he was such a well-known local figure, but I have to say the sale exceeded our expectations," she added.
