Golden treasure results for the UK

Tuesday, 26th October 2004 (3255 views)

The UK's Arts Minister has welcomed the latest figures in this year's Treasure Annual Report.

Estelle Morris explained the report showed a further increase in the number of treasures found and that by the end of this year they could reach 500.

Ms Morris said: "Metal-detector users are responsible for the great majority of Treasure finds. I am pleased to see how present arrangements are encouraging both them and archaeologists alike to co-operate on identifying and recording finds ensuring that important information about our heritage is not lost."

In the report, details of 240 new cases have been included, with 104 being acquired by museums across the country.

Among the items discovered were 26 Roman gold objects from the late third or fourth centuries including statuettes and jewellery.

In addition, a medieval gold finger-ring from the late 15th or early 16th century has been found.
