Hungarian treasures in new exhibition

Wednesday, 13th October 2004 (3226 views)

A host of golden treasures have gone on display in Hungary, once owned by the richest and most powerful family in Hungary.

'Princely Treasures from the Esterhazy Collection' is the grand finale, marking the end of Magyar Magic - a series of events that have been held throughout this year to celebrate Hungary joining the EU.

Among the items on display are gold cups, a gold box with a portrait of George IV, King of England on it and a gold tazza - a flat dish with a stem, decorated with the family's coat of arms.

According to the Star Online, the family dominated Hungary's political and social life from the 17th to the 20th centuries.

The collection was once one of the richest hoardings owned by a single family and many pieces had been destroyed and needed considerable resurrection to restore them.
