Anglo Saxon coin raises over $400,000

Thursday, 7th October 2004 (3701 views)

A gold coin is to hit the record books as the most expensive British coin.

The 1,200-year-old Anglo Saxon penny sold for $409,000 this week when it went to auction.

Allan Davisson, an American collector, purchased the gold coin, which is thought to be the only one known to show the name of King Coenwulf of Mercia.

The coin was found in 2001 by an amateur with a metal detector, but the King displayed on it ruled a region in Southern England from 796 to 821.

Now the world record has been broken, since the prior auction record for a British coin was a gold item showing George III's crown and which sold for $303,000 in 1999.
