Gold war coin stolen from Manchester Museum

Thursday, 9th September 2004 (3304 views)

Manchester police are on the hunt after a valuable solid gold coin was stolen from the Manchester Museum.

The coin was part of a collection of three that are officially known as 'Nobles' and were taken from a security case in the coin room.

Two of the stolen coins have been recovered but police are now appealing to the public to help trace the third golden item, according to Manchester Online.

The 'Nobles' were minted between 1445 and 1485 as gold bullion and were used as army payment during the Wars of the Roses.

Each one is worth around £1,000-£3,000 and is approximately the size of a 2p coin.

The display was part of a collection in the museum, which was on loan from London's British Museum and was discovered in Nottinghamshire in 1966.
