The American public is being given a glimpse of how the jewellery industry has developed in the last 100 years in a new show in New York.

Visitors to the 'Masterpieces of American Jewellery' exhibition can see over 200 necklaces and brooches charting a century of evolving tastes and fashions.

The jewellery exhibit is being run by the National Jewellery Institute and is due to run until January next year.

Ralph Esmerian, curator of the American Folk Art Museum exhibit, told the Associated Press that the show featured some of the older traits of the American jewellery trade - but retained the quality of workmanship that is still demanded today.

“American jewellers believed in the classical traditions and craftsmanship that came from Europe but they present a simplified version of classic,” he commented.

Among the highlights of the show - which encompasses all manner of styles from the Art Deco period of the 1920s to the modern ostentatious pieces - are the two 24-karat horse-head sculptures by Herbert Haseltine that open it.
