Precious metal provides solution for nanorods

Wednesday, 14th July 2004 (3350 views)

Gold is being used to help create nanoscale dumbbells, chains and tetrapods in new work by researchers in Israel.

Based at Hebrew University in Israel, studies have found a way to use tiny amounts of gold as tips on semiconductor nanocrystals that could end up being used as ultra-small transistors or memory elements in nanoelectronic circuits.

According to TRN, these developments are a key step towards solving the problems of how to wire such small objects together.

In addition, the nanorod-gold objects might also result in materials with new chemical and optical properties.

It is hoped the gold-tipped structures could be used in novel self-assembly within five years, whilst practical use in nanoelectronics is set to occur in the next five to ten years.
