US divers uncover old Spanish jewellery

Tuesday, 13th July 2004 (3759 views)

Divers have discovered a collection of jewellery and coins at a Spanish shipwreck in Florida.

The discovery was made after perfect diving conditions have been offered at the 'Treasure Coast', allowing archaeologists to find items dating back from 1715.

Among the jewellery items are a detailed gold bracelet and a five-inch cross, according to Florida Today.

"The sunken ships were time capsules. It's a wonderful piece of our history and world history because trade routes tied the world together," said Ed Perry, a parks services specialist who runs the state-owned McLarty Treasure Museum.

So far the worth of this year's finds from around the coast are unknown but 20 per cent of the value of finds always goes towards helping the state.

Since the 1960s the state has collected around 1,400 gold coins and hundreds of millions of dollars in jewellery, gold and jewels.
