New technology has been developed by Hebrew University using gold to help boost the emerging nanotechnology sector.

The gold-tipped nanocrystals, can be used as highly efficient building blocks for devices in the sector.

Researchers at the university developed the nanodumbells, which are shaped like the mini-weightlifting bars and stop the need to build new nanocrystals transistors, the basic component of computer chips.

The nanocrystals have unique optical and electrical properties controlled by their size, shape and composition.

Gold tips were attached with a simple chemical reaction to a semiconductor to create the crystals and the strong chemical bond with the semiconductor creates a good electrical connectivity.

In addition the chemical bonding of the precious metal helps to solve problems involved in simultaneously producing billions of circuits.
